Hey Rally Sport Track Junkies!! And Future/Wannabe Track Junkies, too!
Two things of interest going on today, Tuesday, March 19th:
First: it’s the first day of Spring 2024! Yes, we may be seeing a few snow flurries, but at least our flowers and trees are showing signs that the season is really close.
Second, but more important to us Porsche geeks, and other similarly minded folks, our Waterford HPDE (high performance driving event) is only EIGHT WEEKS AWAY!!! Tuesday, May 14th to be specific. So, all y’all best get the car cover off your favorite track toy, change the oil (if you didn’t last fall like you’re supposed to), bleed the brakes, check the brake pads, and get your Tech Inspection scheduled SOON!!!
This first HPDE of the season, and one of two at Waterford this year, is designated as “Beginner-Focused” but anyone and everyone can come – and should! It doesn’t matter if this is your first, second or 99th HPDE, Waterford is still a blast to drive. But more on that in a moment.
For those “seasoned veterans” – e.g., old geezers like me – do you remember your first driver school? It could have been PCA or SCCA, or even another club like BMW or even Corvette club (I kid!). I remember mine: ‘twas 49 years ago at Summit Point Raceway in extreme eastern West Virginia. I had my arm twisted to bring my 1-year owned very stock signal red 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe on 4½” skinny steel wheels and stone-hard Michelin X-Stop tires. I got hooked, but not too many details now as I’m roughing this into an article for my 50th anniversary of Porsche ownership for an upcoming Bahn Stormer article, so stay tuned for that (get ready Mike O’Rear). Needless to say, things have changed since then, pretty much all for the better.
Waterford is a fun and challenging 1.4-mile circuit with 13 turns and Hill Top turn that's a mirror image of Mid Ohio's Turn 7 – turn-right-over-the-hill, stuff your right foot into it and hang on! It’s a great upper-body workout with no free weights involved!! We'll supply caffeine and carbs, pay for your lunch at the Track Grill and supply some of the best instructors in the business. As said earlier this is traditionally beginner/novice-focused, but there's time and space for drivers of all levels, with plenty of instructors available for all – you never know, you may learn something, too! But PLEASE don’t delay too long as Early Bird pricing ends May 1st and new this year we will be limiting group sizes to ease the burden on our hard-working instructors.
